Some Thoughts About Photography

They say that "time marches on."  For the most part, that seems to hold true, and the older I get, the faster the clock marches.  There is an exception though.  Pictures offer us a chance to freeze time, if only for a moment.  That instant of time is ours now.  We can go back and view it as often as we want.  Sometimes, it offers precious memories of our kids, or maybe a fishing trip with Dad.  Other times, it gives us a chance to study, in detail, a plant, or a spider, or the flow of water down a mountain stream.  And still, at other times, it gives us a chance to bear witness to change; perhaps the gray hair that was once brown or blonde that now only serves to demonstrate how well that piece-of-crap clock is working.

So, what do I shoot?  I started out with print film on an old Nikon EM with Nikor lenses.  I learned a lot and took some really great pictures along the way.  But the thought of trying to digitize all of those old prints is horrible indeed, and the only thing worse, would be to bear the cost of taking all the negatives in to have them done.  As a result, all of the pics here will be of the digital variety and fairly recent.  One day, I hope to move up to one of the Nikon SLR digitals, but for now, I shoot a Nikon Coolpix 995, which is a great little camera.

My favorite subjects are listed above.  I like mountain landscapes, flowers, animals (big and small), and I love old buildings like barns, Churches, and old homes.  Some of the pics of mountains are over on the mountains web page.  Some of my subjects aren't "studio friendly."  Critters are usually either a little skiddish and quick to dash off or completely oblivious to photographers.  As such, they can be a little tricky to shoot.  Of course, a little wind can cause problems to, especially with flowers.  Check out the Photo Oops page to see what I'm talking about.  Some quick notes:

About the flower photos

There was a time when I felt very sorry for those who were visually impaired; those folks that, typically through no fault of their own, couldn't see a flower.  I especially felt bad for colorblind men (yeah, it's a man thing) that couldn't see the colors.  I still feel bad for these people, but most of the time, they don't really know what they're missing.  Recently though, I've begun to feel much more pitty towards those that have perfectly good eyes and still can't see.  Maybe this page will give 'em another view.

Flowers are wonderful things indeed, but I don't know much about them, except that I think they're pretty.  So, in those cases (and that will be the lion's share), the title of the picture will simply say "Flower."  As you look at them, if you know what any of them are, please let me know the row (from the bottom), the column (from the left), and the flower name and I'll update them.

About the structures photos

At a time when America is at the apex of its industrial revolution, structures are being built every day.  Everything from modern sky scrapers to small sheds are being built, or assembled, from sun up to sun down, and from coast to coast.  So, what kind of structures are we talking about here?

Well, it's the old ones... the structures that don't necessarily show the industry of America, but rather, the industry of Americans.  Structures that demonstrate qualities like inginuity, craftsmanship, and graceful charm.  Structures like the pioneer's log cabin or the town's covered bridge.  Buildings like the farmer's barn, the community's church, or the old fort.  Structures that are America's history.  No, there is nothing new here...

About the critters photos

This page will have all sorts of critters; big critters and little critters!  Most of them are smaller than a bread basket, but some are a little bigger.

As for bugs, they're very task oriented and don't really stop what they're doing to "pose" for pictures.  As a result, bug pics are usually pretty slow in coming, but new ones will show up, so check for bug page updates.  In the mean time, thank goodness for digital and the easily disposable picture...

About the landscape photos

They will almost all be photos of the mountains.  Some others may sneak in, but they'll be much more the exception than the rule.

Resources

Technology can be a wonderful thing for the masses, but, it can have a down side too.  Imagine yourself as the world leader in slide rule manufacturing... when calculators came out.  Imagine the surprise when the buggy industry realized that the Model-T was more than just a fad.  And so it is with photography.  One wonders what Kodak's management is thinking as the world transitions from print film to digital.  Anyway... some cool digital photography resources:
