Great Smoky Mountain Assn. |
All of my mountain pages were built as briefs or overviews to give web readers a sense of the area and the mountains that I love. None of these pages were ever designed to the be the definitive source of information on mountain folklore, culture, or history. While a lot of the information here is empirically supported and available online, a lot of it is not! Some days, it's just hard to beat a book. And frankly, there's just no romantic imagery when one ponders curling up in front of the fireplace with a good browser. All of the books referenced in the resource sections of the various web pages here are listed below. If readers are looking for those more definitive cultural and historical resources, this is the place to start. Many of the writers of these book are often the people that lived that culture and history. That said, should one want to look into obtaining any of these or myriad other books about the southern Appalachian mountains, I would encourage you to check first at the bookstores linked to the left. Many of these are non-profits, but all of them use portions of their proceeds to maintain the historical and cultural heritage of the park, the mountains, and the old Appalachian way of life. Please support them. If you're a bookstore that fits the model detailed above, send me your info and I'll add a link to your website here. Conversely, if yours is a "for profit" enterprise, please respect the spirit of this endeavor and don't bother. Additionally, if you are a reader and see a link that breaks this model, please let me know and I'll take care of it. You can reach me using this site's form-mail. Thank you.
